This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 126 pages. Book excerpt: When a genetic condition meets an addiction, life becomes difficult for a middle class mid-western girl. The Story Of A Sunday's Child is the true story of such an encounter. After becoming a young adult Stevie finds that her learning problems and physical traces on her body are the result of a genetic condition called Neurofibromatosis. When Stevie tells her fiancée about her problems she expects to be rejected but instead he is sympathetic. Unfortunately he turns out to be a high functioning alcoholic. Stevie watches helplessly as her marriage and her appearance become increasingly influenced by these two factors. It's the story of learning to live with something that cannot be changed; then finding the courage to leave a marriage gone aground on alcoholism. Nothing is sugar coated. Stevie's story is bluntly honest. It is not a "how I learned to live with" type of book. Many questions remain unresolved at the end of the narrative.

This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 178 pages. Book excerpt: Ingmar Bergman's rich legacy as film director and writer of classics such as The Seventh Seal, Scenes From a Marriage, and Fanny and Alexander has attracted scholars not only in film studies but also of literature, theater, gender, philosophy, religion, sociology, musicology, and more. Less known, however, is Bergman from the perspective of production studies, including all the choices, practices, and routines involved in what goes on behind the scenes. For instance, what about Bergman's collaborations and conflicts with film producers? What about his work with musicians at the opera, technicians in the television studio, and actors on the film set. What about Bergman and MeToo? In order to throw light on these issues, art practitioners such as film directors Ang Lee and Margarethe von Trotta, film and opera director Atom Egoyan, and film producer and screenwriter James Schamus are brought together with academics such as philosopher and film scholar Paisley Livingston, musicologist Alexis Luko, and playwright and performance studies scholar Allan Havis to discuss Bergman's work from their unique perspectives. In addition, Ingmar Bergman at the Crossroads provides, for the first time, in-depth interviews with Bergman's longtime collaborators Katinka Faragó and Måns Reuterswärd, who both have first-hand experience of working intimately as producers in film and television with Bergman, covering more than 5 decades. In an open exchange between individual and institutional perspectives, this book bridges the often-rigid boundaries between theoreticians and practitioners, in turn pointing Bergman studies in new directions.

This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 240 pages. Book excerpt: Gotlieb is a writer central to the Canadian science fiction canon. Though she has been called the queen of Canadian SF by Robert J. Sawyer, and though David Ketterer has suggested that she is Canadian SF, Gotlieb has been largely overlooked by SF studies. This book delves deeply into her body of work and traces her career in detail. Offering close readings of Gotlieb's novels, short stories (including ones not reprinted since their initial appearances), and SF-related poetry, this study explores Gotlieb's development as a writer and her characteristic themes. The book also references her manuscripts when the differences between them and the published stories provide insights into her working methods. The book enumerates and analyzes Gotlieb's innovative explorations of common SF tropes such as the superhuman, human-alien interaction, and the galactic empire, her prevalent thematic concerns (e.g., reproduction, colonization, the mind-body relationship, the essence of "humanity") as well as her stylistically dense and literary approach to the genre.

This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 214 pages. Book excerpt: Preaching from Inside the Story is a book that seeks to carve out an understanding of narrative preaching in an age where there is little agreement about its nature and practice. Capitalizing on the works of Craddock and Lowry, it seeks to find an expanded palette upon which the preacher may engage the larger canvas of narrative preaching. This book will engage the mind by introducing neuroscientific understandings of creativity; build upon the foundations of the philosophy of stories by engaging Aristotle’s foundational understanding of narrative; and renew the Lowry Loop by expanding this seminal work and how it should be understood in our current culture. Preaching from Inside the Story breaks new ground by encouraging preachers to move inside stories and tell them from the inside out providing a positive effect, thereby affording non-narrative preachers to connect with storytelling principles. Ultimately, it is filled with examples of how to do narrative in a very practical way. However, in showing these practical examples, the reader is involved in a deep analysis of those narrative sermons and how they fit into an overall narrative understanding of preaching. In the final analysis, it invites the reader to take a fresh journey into narrative preaching.

When Ameenah Salim unexpectedly enters Danny's life, she causes him to reexamine everything he grew up believing. And when he's called to work For The military and spy against Amee's people, their already unacceptable romance comes even more into question. Will Amee forsake her heritage to be with Danny? Will Danny's faith grow stronger than his love for piloting some of America's most awesome and powerful machinery? Will the government be able to thwart the terrorist plot that is surely in the mix before the worst happens? Readers will be riveted by the romance tightly wound in suspense in Sunday's Child, by new author Garvin Dykes. Dykes draws upon his experience as a counselor, pastor, and world traveler to expose the hurts and conflicts locked within the souls of far too many people. Sunday's Child is a story that brings the impersonal conflicts between races and religions into the only perspective that matters: The relationship between two people.

This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 304 pages. Book excerpt: Children's Bibles have been among the most popular and influential types of religious publications in the United States, providing many Americans with their first formative experiences of the Bible and its stories. In Children's Bibles in America, Russell W. Dalton explores the variety of ways in which children's Bibles have adapted, illustrated, and retold Bible stories for children throughout U.S. history. This reception history of the story of Noah as it appears in children's Bibles provides striking examples of the multivalence and malleability of biblical texts, and offers intriguing snapshots of American culture and American religion in their most basic forms. Dalton demonstrates the ways in which children's Bibles reflect and reveal America's diverse and changing beliefs about God, childhood, morality, and what must be passed on to the next generation. Dalton uses the popular story of Noah's ark as a case study, exploring how it has been adapted and appropriated to serve in a variety of social agendas. Throughout America's history, the image of God in children's Bible adaptations of the story of Noah has ranged from that of a powerful, angry God who might destroy children at any time to that of a friendly God who will always keep children safe. At the same time, Noah has been lifted up as a model of virtues ranging from hard work and humble obedience to patience and positive thinking. Dalton explores these uses of the story of Noah and more as he engages the fields of biblical studies, the history of religion in America, religious education, childhood studies, and children's literature.
