Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing questions in contemporary American Christianity is whether the recent warming of relations between Catholics and conservative evangelicals promises a thaw in the ice age that has lasted since the sixteenth century. American evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics have hated and suspected one another since colonial times. In the twentieth century, however, each community has experienced radical change, and this has led to a change in the relationship between the two. In this book William Shea examines the history of this troubled relationship and the signs of potential reconciliation. His springboard is the recent publicity given to the 1993 document Evangelicals and Catholics Together, in which several well-known figures from each camp, acting as individuals, signed a statement affirming much more common theological and social ground than any other American Catholic-evangelical group had ever done. Looking back, Shea surveys the long and very bitter history of published recriminations that have flown back and forth between Catholics and many kinds of Protestants since the 16th century. He makes the case that Catholics and conservative Protestants reacted along parallel lines to western "modernity" - especially naturalistic evolution and higher criticism of the Bible). That deeper history leads him to the more recent history that has partially overcome the severe Catholic-evangelical antagonisms. Here he focuses on the rise of "neo-evangelicals" associated with Billy Graham and the National Association of Evangelicals and on the changes with the Catholic church since Vatican II. He goes on to offer systematic interpretations of recent evangelical literature on Catholics and Catholic literature on evangelicals. The book ends with some historical, but also theological, social and personal conclusions. This accessible, groundbreaking, and timely study will be indispensable reading for all interested in the religious landscape of America today.

Book excerpt: Why live under a pagan sky? For thousands of years, humankind has dwelled under a dome of stars that have been grouped and identified according to ancient superstitions. Today, the official star constellations pay homage to the pagan gods and goddesses of a dark and chaotic world, a world before Christ, and yet these are the constellations that scouting groups and school children all around the world have been encouraged to learn for hundreds of years. Now, for the first time, the sky has been mapped in accordance with easy-to-find star patterns that tell the stories of the Christian faith. No telescope required. No sophisticated instruments needed. After presenting a few simple but very effective techniques for finding your way through the sky at night, the author takes you on a tour of the Christian constellations. Using new constellations inspired by stories from the Bible, you will be able to locate stars, planets, star clusters, and galaxies during any time of the night and at any time of the year. If you have ever wanted to know more about God's grandest creation but have never felt comfortable learning about ancient pagan idols, then this book will provide you with a healthy fresh start.

This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 174 pages. Book excerpt: Although the Apostle John endorses “Lamb” twenty-nine times in his Apocalypse and employs a term that is used only one other time in the New Testament to this end, this unique title and its sophisticated christological implications has only received cursory attention both historically and more recently. Even then, incomplete/monochromatic interpretations of the unique verbiage John employs to describe Christ are reached. After identifying this clearing that exists in the christological forest, this book reaches a robust understanding of Revelation’s Lamb by means of a contextual-grammatical-canonical-historical hermeneutic. Ultimately, this monograph concludes that the apostle’s use of Lamb throughout his Apocalypse promotes a multifaceted christological presentation of John’s protagonist that is dependent on the paradoxical theme of glory in humility—a theme that is introduced when the Lamb first emerges in Revelation 5 and is then reiterated every time the title is used thereafter. In so doing, this work offers students and scholars alike a better understanding of who is coming in the end and what this means for the church at present.

Book excerpt: The act of martyrdom in the worldview of the Apocalypse has been considered to be an exemplification of non-violent resistance. Paul Middleton argues here, however, that it is in fact a representation of direct participation by Christians, through their martyrdom, in divine violence against those the author of Revelation portrays as God's enemies. Middleton shows that acceptance of martyrdom is to grasp the invitation to participate in the Revelation's divine violence. Martyrs follow the model laid down by the Lamb, who was not only slain, but resurrected, glorified, and who executes judgement. The world created by the Apocalypse encourages readers to conquer the Beast through martyrdom, but also through the experience of resurrection and being appointed judges. In this role, martyrs participate in the judgement of the wicked by sharing the Lamb's power to judge. Different from eschewing violence, the conceptual world of the Apocalypse portrays God, the Lamb, and the martyrs as possessing more power, might, and violent potential than the Emperor and his armies. Middleton believes that martyrdom and violence are necessary components of the worldview of Revelation.

This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 422 pages. Book excerpt: The symbolism of Revelation has puzzled readers for centuries. Every generation falls prey to extreme views of interpretation. Even worse, they minimize the importance of John's Apocalypse by not teaching or preaching from it. Yet Revelation is a profound work of New Testament theology and warrants a close study. John expects and prepares believers to follow the Lamb through suffering and possible martyrdom. The problem is centered on what the symbols mean. Are they literal? Are they symbolic? Do the images refer to events and people in the first century, or to the last days of planet earth? Moreover, how is the book structured? Is it one vision, four visions, or more? Are the visions linear or recapped? Lions, Locusts, and the Lamb: Interpreting Key Images in the Book of Revelation demonstrates a way to unlock John's structure and unravel his symbols. The key is to follow a logical step-by-step interpretive approach that accents the historical, cultural, intertextual, extratextual, and particularly intratextual allusions and connections. The result is a book that delivers the basic meaning of three hundred images and categorizes them into an accessible guide for teachers, preachers, and readers of Revelation.

Book excerpt: Pastor Brian Zahnd began "to question the theology of a wrathful God who delights in punishing sinners, and has started to explore the real nature of Jesus and His Father. The book isn’t only an interesting look at the context of some modern theological ideas; it’s also offers some profound insight into God’s love and eternal plan." —Relevant Magazine (Named one of the Top 10 Books of 2017) God is wrath? Or God is Love? In his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Puritan revivalist Jonathan Edwards shaped predominating American theology with a vision of God as angry, violent, and retributive. Three centuries later, Brian Zahnd was both mesmerized and terrified by Edwards’s wrathful God. Haunted by fear that crippled his relationship with God, Zahnd spent years praying for a divine experience of hell. What Zahnd experienced instead was the Father’s love—revealed perfectly through Jesus Christ—for all prodigal sons and daughters. In Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Zahnd asks important questions like: Is seeing God primarily as wrathful towards sinners true or biblical? Is fearing God a normal expected behavior? And where might the natural implications of this theological framework lead us? Thoughtfully wrestling with subjects like Old Testament genocide, the crucifixion of Jesus, eternal punishment in hell, and the final judgment in Revelation, Zanhd maintains that the summit of divine revelation for sinners is not God is wrath, but God is love.

Book excerpt: The Christian world is awaiting the Second Coming of Christ to take the Bride of Chist with him in glory, which we call Rapture. There are many explanations from various quarters. The First Coming of Christ is past. The Third Coming will take place when Christ, the son of David comes down on the Mount of Olives to rule the earth for a millennium. The Second Coming is on. The author Bro. Deva Evu Lawrie had had an experience of peace with God early in life at the age of eight. He had been a keen observer in the ministry of his father. He was a student of the famous Madras Christian College, Tambaram, Chennai. He became a full-time minister of religion when he was eighteen. He had been working with his dad since then. There was a great turning point when his dad, Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie, was preaching at Chicago, USA. He had a great experience of God coming down into him when man first landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. The sky opened, and he could see and feel a great and terrific power enter into his life (Luke 3: 2122). In these pages, Bro. Deva Evu Lawrie, the author, shows that most of the prophecies and things concerning the Second Coming have been fulfilled in the ministry of Bro. Paulaseer Lawrie of India. He cites mostly from the Holy Scriptures. He wants the readers to go through the book carefully so that they do not miss the glory that God had foreordained for us in this generation.
