Book excerpt: In the piazza, a man lies dead. No one will say if they witnessed his killing. This presents a challenge to the investigating officer, a man who earnestly believes in the values of a democratic and modern society. Indeed, his enquiries are soon blocked off by a wall of silence and vested interests; he must work against the community to save it and expose the truth. The narrative moves on two levels: that of the investigator, who reveals a chain of savage crimes; and that of the bystanders and watchers, of those complicit with secret power, whose gossipy, furtive conversations have only one end - to stop the truth coming out. This novel about the Mafia is also a mesmerizing demonstration of how that organization sustains itself. It is both a beautifully, tautly written story and a brave act of denunciation.

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking and innovative text addresses the deep ontological and epistemological commitments that underpin conventional positivist methods and then demonstrates how "method" can be understood in much broader and more interesting ways. Drawing on a broad range of philosophical and methodological theory as well as a wide variety of artistic sources from fine art to cinema and from literature to the blues, leading contemporary thinker Michael Shapiro shows the reader how a more open understanding of the concept of method is rewarding and enlightening. His notion of 'writing-as-method' is enacted throughout the text and offers a stimulating alternative for students to positivist social science methods. This is essential reading for all students and faculty with an interest in post-positivist methods.

They tell us of the struggles, the triumphs, and the wanderings of the people, of their thoughts, their aspirations; in short, they give us a twilight history of the race. As the geologist finds in the rocks the dim records of the beginnings of life on our planet, the first foreshadowings of the mighty forests that have since covered the lands, and of the countless forms of animal life that have at last culminated in Man, so does the historian discover in the legends of a people the dim traces of its origin and development till it comes out in the stronger light of the later day. So it is with the legends of the Hawaiians, or of the Polynesian race. We see them, very indistinctly, starting from some distant home in Asia, finally reaching the Pacific Ocean, and then gradually spreading abroad over its islands till they dominate a large portion of its extent. In bringing together this collection of Hawaiian legends, the author of this little book has conferred a great favor upon all those residents of Hawaii and of those visitors to its shores who may take an interest in its original inhabitants, once an exceedingly numerous people, but now a scattering remnant only. To that native race this little book will be at once a joy and a sorrow; to the heart of the haole, who has lived among them, known them intimately for thirty years or more (as has the writer of this Foreword), and learned to love them, this collection of the legends of old Honolulu brings a warm "Aloha!

This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page pages. Book excerpt: The darkness that will come upon the people of God at the beginning of the day of the Lord shall not be the same as the affliction that came upon her when Jesus came the first time. The end of the age of grace will not be as dark as the end of the age of the law because the [Gentile] people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; those that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined. Yes, it’s true that great apostasy has engulfed much of Western Europe and seems to be making quite a bit of headway in North America. But what about places (to name a few) such as China, Iran, Egypt, Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Africa, and even India, where the gospel is surging? Most of the end-time harvest is taking place under great adversity and persecution. So, for now it can be said, As thou hast multiplied the nation [the people of God], thou hast not increased the joy. But the day of the Lord will be the biggest game-changer ever seen in human history. For those among the people of God who have clean hearts when Jesus returns, They shall rejoice before thee as they rejoice in the harvest and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil, even as all the kingdoms of this world crumble and come down. The vision of Isaiah is a prophetic hub placed in the middle of the Scriptures with ties to almost every book in the Bible (most are footnoted in this work). There are living parables of events that actually happened during the lifetime of Isaiah, prophecies regarding Judah and Jerusalem with both a near and a far fulfillment, all interwoven with messianic prophecy depicting events surrounding the first and second comings of Jesus Christ, the final judgment, and the new creation with new heavens and a new earth. A central theme of Isaiah relates to the day of the LORD (as does the book of Revelation). We know there is a special blessing on the seventh day (Genesis 2:3). Scripture also defines what some call a “prophetic day” mentioned in both the unique Psalm attributed to Moses: For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past and as a watch in the night (Psalm 90:4), and by Simon Peter: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day before the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years are as one day (2 Peter 3:8). Human history has now entered into the beginning of the seventh millennium since the creation of Adam, according to the years and generations meticulously recorded in Scripture. There is, however, the possibility of two distinct timelines — one dating from the creation of Adam and the other dating from the fall of man when the present world system founded on lies devised by Satan began. Scripture does not specify exactly when the curse was pronounced, and Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. The original world created by God (and founded on truth) was pronounced "very good." It’s clear, however, that Satan subverted the authority God had placed on Adam, and this sorry situation will not be corrected until the day of the Lord (the seventh millennium). We now appear to be in an ambiguous period in which it’s clear (no matter what relatively minor discrepancies there may be in our calendar) that more than six thousand years have passed since the creation of Adam. However, it does not appear that six thousand years have gone by since the fall of man. If the seventh prophetic day begins with the demise of Satan and the promise he will be bound for a thousand years, the first resurrection of those who will reign and rule with Christ for a thousand years, and the return of Jesus Christ, then it’s also clear that the prophesied day of the LORD has not yet begun — although it may be very close. This is when religion that has been contaminated by man (by humanism) and manipulated by the devil will all come down. The pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep thyself unspotted by the world (James 1:27). As we enter the end-time events described by Isaiah, it’s good to keep in mind that there is a substantial godly remnant containing true ministers (servants) of God who, like Isaiah, have been cleansed by the fire of God and commissioned from the throne, and who have authority to represent God according to his will. They desire to see the people entrusted to their care joined to the Lord Jesus, so that all of God’s people may have intimate communion with him and with the Father, by the Holy Spirit. This is the only covering that will provide secure protection. How much time do we have left? I think we probably do have a little time, but not a lot. The world situation around us is not improving. It is, in fact, degenerating rapidly (even though some countries are experiencing spiritual revival). We can expect things to continue to polarize as the bride of Christ is cleansed and purified and as Babylon the Great continues to degenerate. The evil in the world will soon pass a threshold that will trigger the indignation and wrath of God the Father, and Jesus will soon return for a bride without spot or wrinkle or any such thing. These two things seem to happen in very close succession on the day of the Lord. There are other prophetic markers that may bear watching. The two thousandth anniversaries of the beginning of the ministry of Jesus, of his death and resurrection, of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and of the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple are all coming up within what many of us can expect to be our lifetime. Even if the coming of the Lord should be delayed (so that more people can be given the opportunity to be saved), we are told to always be ready. None of us knows when our own death will take place and when we could be suddenly thrust into the presence of God. Russell M. Stendal December 17, 2020 Bogotá, Colombia

Book excerpt: The Time of the City is a trans-disciplinary work with a focus on genre-city relationships as they articulate the micropolitics of urban life in diverse cities. Shifting the territorial emphasis of political studies from the mosaic of states to the global network of cities, the book draws on urban theory rather than traditional forms of official city politics. Deriving their methodological approaches from aspects of urban theory and philosophies of aesthetics, the chapters deploy concepts from philosophy, political theory, literary studies, cinema studies, poetics and aesthetic theory on diverse cities, among which are Berlin, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Investigating a wide variety of urban formations, and developing a geophilosophy appropriate to urban space, this multi genre approach to urban life provides stunning insights into the micropolitics of ethnicity, identity, security, subjectivity and sovereignty.

Book excerpt: Summer 2018: Two years into President Donald J. Trump's first term in office, America has never been greater. The Even Greater Wall along the Mexican border is under construction, paid for by Mexico. Americans have more money in their pockets thanks to lower taxes and the president's creative money-raising strategies. (Who else would have thought to pay for FEMA's budget by suing the Catholic Church over property damage caused by acts of God?) And while Trump's detractors may call him a tyrant, the American people love bullies when the victim is Congress: every time they impeach the president, his approval rating skyrockets. Ever conscious of his hugely important historical legacy, The Donald plucks disgraced tabloid reporter Jimmie Bernwood—the man responsible for publishing the infamous Ted Cruz sex tape—from the depths of anonymity to become his official biographer, giving him enviable access to the gold-plated White House and all of its secrets. When Trump's previous biographer turns up dead, Bernwood must do some real investigative reporting, get to the bottom of a long series of murders...and, if it's absolutely unavoidable, save the country. The Day of the Donald is a hilariously hair-raising look at the (possible) future of America.

Book excerpt: The mafia has always fascinated filmmakers and television producers. Al Capone, Salvatore Giuliano, Lucky Luciano, Ciro Di Marzio, Roberto Saviano, Don Vito and Michael Corleone, and Tony Soprano are some of the historical and fictional figures that contribute to the myth of the Italian and Italian-American mafias perpetuated onscreen. This collection looks at mafia movies and television over time and across cultures, from the early classics to the Godfather trilogy and contemporary Italian films and television series. The only comprehensive collection of its type, Mafia Movies treats over fifty films and TV shows created since 1906, while introducing Italian and Italian-American mafia history and culture. The second edition includes new original essays on essential films and TV shows that have emerged since the publication of the first edition, such as Boardwalk Empire and Mob Wives, as well as a new roundtable section on Italy's "other" mafias in film and television, written as a collaborative essay by more than ten scholars. The edition also introduces a new section called "Double Takes" that elaborates on some of the most popular mafia films and TV shows (e.g. The Godfather and The Sopranos) organized around themes such as adaptation, gender and politics, urban spaces, and performance and stardom.

Free book TItalian Crime Fiction in the Era of the Anti-Mafia Movement. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 234 pages. Book excerpt: Over the last three decades, Italian crime fiction has demonstrated a trend toward a much higher level of realism and complexity. The origins of the New Italian Epic, as it has been coined by some of its proponents, can be found in the widespread backlash against the Mafia-sponsored murders of Sicilian magistrates which culminated with the assassinations of Judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992. Though beginning in the Italian language, this prolific, popular movement has more recently found its way into the English language and hence it has found a much wider international audience. Following a brief, yet detailed, history of the cultural and economic development of Sicily, this book provides a multilayered look into the evolution of the New Italian Epic genre. The works of ten prominent contemporary writers, including Andrea Camilleri, Michael Dibdin, Elena Ferrante, and Massimo Carlotto, are examined against the backdrop of various historical periods. This "past is prologue" approach to contemporary crime fiction provides context for the creation of these recent novels and enhances understanding of the complex moral ambiguity that is characteristic of anti-mafia Italian crime fiction.
