Book excerpt: ‘Man and Superman’ is one of the finest and most devilish four-act dramas, written by George Bernard Shaw in 1903. Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. The series was written in response to calls for Shaw to write a play based on the Don Juan theme. It opened at the Royal Court Theatre in London on 23 May 1905, but it omitted the third act. It portrays Don Juan as the quarry instead of the huntsman. John Tanner, upon discovering that his beautiful ward plans to marry him, flees to the Sierra Nevada mountain range, where he is captured by a group of rebels. Tanner falls asleep, and dreams of the famous ‘Don Juan in Hell’ sequence, which features a sparkling Shavian debate among Don Juan, the Devil, and a talkative statue. With its fairy-tale ending and a cast literally from hell, it is a hilarious cocktail of farce, Nietzschean philosophy, and Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Book excerpt: All of the creator of Mad magazine’s rarely seen EC science fiction comics stories in a single volume! These stories ― all drawn by Kurtzman, some of which he also wrote ― are from the pages of Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, Tales from the Crypt, and more. With Al Feldstein, Kurtzman created "Lost in the Microcosm," "The Man Who Raced Time," and "Atom Bomb Thief." There's also "The Radioactive Child," "The Last War on Earth," and the titular story, a cautionary tale about how the laws of physics would impact a real-world superhero, delivered in a uniquely bold, slashing cartoony-but-dead-serious style.

Book excerpt: Exclusive to Penguin Classics: the definitive text of the first great twentieth-century English play and a classic exposé of the eternal struggle between the sexes—part of the official Bernard Shaw Library A Penguin Classic After the death of her father, Ann Whitefield becomes the joint ward of two men: the respectable Roebuck Ramsden and John Tanner, author of “The Revolutionist’s Handbook.” Believing marriage would prevent him from achieving his higher intellectual and political ambitions, Tanner is horrified to discover that Ann intends to marry him, and he flees to Spain with the determined young woman in hot pursuit. The chase even leads them to the underworld, where the characters’ alter egos discuss questions of human nature and philosophy in a lively debate in a scene often performed separately as “Don Juan in Hell.” In Man and Superman, Shaw combined seriousness with comedy to create a satirical and buoyant exposé of the eternal struggle between the sexes. This is the definitive text produced under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence. The volume also includes Shaw’s preface of 1903 and his appendix, “The Revolutionist’s Handbook”; the cast list from the first production of Man and Superman; and a list of his principal works.

Book excerpt: Man and Superman A Comedy and a Philosophy By Bernard Shaw CLASSIC DRAMA Man and Superman is a four-act drama written by George Bernard Shaw in 1903. The series was written in response to calls for Shaw to write a play based on the Don Juan theme. Man and Superman opened at The Royal Court Theatre in London on 23 May 1905, but omitted the third act. A part of the act, Don Juan in Hell (Act 3, Scene 2), was performed when the drama was staged on 4 June 1907 at the Royal Court. The play was not performed in its entirety until 1915, when the Travelling Repertory Company played it at the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh. Mr. Whitefield has recently died, and his will indicates that his daughter Ann should be left in the care of two men, Roebuck Ramsden and Jack Tanner. Ramsden, a venerable old man, distrusts John Tanner, an eloquent youth with revolutionary ideas, saying "He is prodigiously fluent of speech, restless, excitable (mark the snorting nostril and the restless blue eye, just the thirty-secondth of an inch too wide open), possibly a little mad". In spite of what Ramsden says, Ann accepts Tanner as her guardian, though Tanner doesn't want the position at all. She also challenges Tanner's revolutionary beliefs with her own ideas. Despite Tanner's professed dedication to anarchy, he is unable to disarm Ann's charm, and she ultimately persuades him to marry her, choosing him over her more persistent suitor, a young man named Octavius Robinson.

Book excerpt: Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy by Bernard Shaw Man and Superman is a massive drama filled with light comedy and deep philosophy, based on Nietzsche's theory of the Abermensch or superman. Acts I, II, and IV play like a romantic comedy with a bite. Ann Whitefield relentlessly pursues dedicated bachelor Jack Tanner, not giving up until he agrees to marry her. Nobody likes Ann, least of all Tanner; she's a selfish bully. But, she is imbued with the Life Force, which makes her charmingly irresistible. By contrast, the third act of the play takes place in hell and the main characters take on the roles of Mozart's Don Giovanni. There, they engage in a long philosophical discussion about the eternal conflicts between men and women and heaven and hell. This third act provides a philosophical context within which to understand the other three acts, giving the comedy and romance of Acts I, II, and IV a deeper meaning. In execution, however, Act III is almost always removed. The third act has also been performed separately, as a single act titled Don Juan in Hell.
