Book excerpt: Lucia has a disturbed childhood. Unloved, she lives a life devoid of care and affection and is unable to express herself or communicate in any way with her family. But one day everything changes when Lucia finds an outlet and a way to communicate real emotion through her poltergeist, 'Ginger'. Set in North London in 1989, sixteen year old Lucia comes home from school one day to discover a patch of water on her exercise paper. Noticing the reaction it gets from her mother, Lucia starts a game pouring water on carpets and beds. When psychics confirm there is malignant energy in the flat, her behaviour escalates. Before long, she is throwing heavy furniture around the flat and writing all over the walls. Before she knows it, she is appearing on national television to convince the public of the poltergeist... Lucia does not understand why she is doing these things, but once she starts, she cannot stop. Why can't she stop and what makes her do these things? And more importantly, does Lucia fake the poltergeist or is Ginger real and part of her? Written from both a first person and third person perspective and with dual time narratives, Lucia's Poltergeist is an unusual psychological suspense novel that explores themes of childhood trauma, the psychological impact of abuse, and the subject of mental illness in teenagers. The universal theme at the heart of this book is polarity and duality; the Jekyll and Hyde, within us all. Definitely one for fans of psychological suspense.

Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Make Way For Lucia, also known as Mapp and Lucia, is a collective name for a series of novels by E. F. Benson about Emmeline "Lucia" Lucas and Elizabeth Mapp. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Several of them are set in the small seaside town of Tilling, closely based on Rye, East Sussex, where Benson lived for a number of years and served as mayor. Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories. This book was released on 2012 with total page 253 pages. Book excerpt: The characters in Joseph Altsheler's "Before the Dawn" have also fallen upon "bluggy" times; but, compared with John Oxenham, Mr. Altsheler is evidently a man of peace. He has added another to the grist of Civil War stories, but he has gone a little aside from the beaten path, and has given us a story of the fall of Richmond, of the wreck of the old regime, of the death-struggle of the Confederacy. There is no violent sectional feeling in the book, and though the heroine is a Northern woman and the hero a Virginian, even that complication rouses little bitterness. Mr. Altsheler has not pictured all Southern women fair and all Southern men chivalrous, but he has done full justice to the honor and courage that supported a lost cause, has been just to Lee, the gallant and brave, as to Grant, the grim and tenacious; and, when the two great men lock forces in the Battle of the Wilderness, one forgets the cause in the magnitude of the struggle, feels only the pity of it all, the tragedy of the sacrifice upon the Union's altar.

Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, the medium of film has developed as a means of understanding the complexity of modern life. Since 1968, film theory has concentrated not so much on theme or content but on the deeper question of how the medium works on its viewer. Film theory has been profoundly influenced by the writings of such modern thinkers as Saussure, Freud, Lacan, Anthusser, Derrida and Kristeva. It combines modes of textual analysis relating to linguistics and semiology, a Marxist reading of ideology, and theories of subjectivity, the spectator and gender redefined by psychoanalysis. This judicious selection from key work by Stephen Heath, Fredric Jameson, Laura Mulvey, Mary Ann Doanne and others, represents some of the most important contemporary writing about film. It provides a consistent and developing analysis that will be of interest to students concerned with film and film studies, as well as students of cultural, media and communication studies.

As the story continues, Addie must learn to survive as a jacker, no longer able to depend on credits or food allotments from the Global United Regions to survive. She and her friends must hide from the GUR and from those who can benefit from turning them into the police or use them for trade. Addie and Rian's relationship is tested as they must live in different worlds; she as a jacker and fugitive, and he as the son of Andrea Gearheart, a prominent GUR representative and face of Rage as One, the popular band always in the limelight of the media. Addie and Lucia must seek refuge from the GUR, hunger, human predators, and fear. Will Rian and his faithful friends be able to lead Addie and Lucia to the only true refuge there is? Jesus Christ. Welcome to the new world of Addie Mitchell and Lucia Gilley. Welcome to the lives of jackers and to the reality of those who dare to rebel against the Global United Regions. Reckless Hope is the final book in the series and will be coming out soon! Addie's life is on the line as she is forced to participate on the television show, Promise or Perish, with her childhood best friend, Gracie Mack, as host. Will Addie make it through the challenges to the end? And if she does, will she choose to live a new life of promise by giving allegiance to the GUR, or will she choose to perish by rejecting the GUR and staying loyal only to Christ?

Book excerpt: The volume is a collection of papers reporting the results of investigations on the interaction of discourse and sentence structure in the languages of Europe. The subjects discussed in the book include: morphosyntactic characteristics of spontaneous spoken texts; different patterns of word order in a pragmatic perspective; the coding of the pragmatic functions topic and focus in sentences with non-canonical word orders (e.g. dislocations, clefts); the range of functions of verb-subject order in declarative clauses and the notion of theticity; prosodic patterns of de-accenting of given information; deixis and anaphora; coding of definiteness and article systems. The book provides the empirical basis for the comparative survey of major phenomena found in the languages of Europe which have pragmatic relevance. Beside traditional areas of investigation at the interface between syntax and pragmatics such as dislocations, new areas are explored, such as the prosody of given information. Data are considered within a functional-typological approach.

Book excerpt: A Girl's Echoing Voice in the Zimbabwe Chimurenga Guerrilla Girl is a historical novel, set amidst the backdrop of the struggle for liberation of Zimbabwe. Whilst the names of the characters are fictitious, the majority of events and places are true. The main protagonist in this novel is also the narrator; a woman fully involved as a trained fighter in most of the events. The story depicts an account of how the women were fully involved in the liberation struggle. The other element to the story is how the women of Zimbabwe had to fight the battle on two fronts, against two kinds of enemy: the struggle against the common enemy, the colonialist, and the struggle against male chauvinism. Most of the African men in Zimbabwe found it hard to accept their women as fighters, let alone armed guerrillas. So women had a hard time trying to assert themselves as capable and trusted liberators. Women were always in extreme danger of being put down by their male counterparts. About the author Helen is a retired college principal lecturer. She grew up in Colonial Zimbabwe, Southern Rhodesia. Initially she trained as a nurse but later worked as a tailor in a garment factory. Helen then joined the African Trade Union Congress and became involved in trade unionism which eventually led to involvement with national political groups. Through her political activities, she met her future husband. Because of their political views they ended up in exile. During this period, they lived in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), USA, UK and Kenya. Helen and her husband remained involved in party politics during their time in exile. They returned to Zimbabwe at independence in 1980. As a black woman, Helen has known extreme poverty and discrimination. She has a passion for the emancipation and advancement of women.
