Deirdre develops uncontrollable magical abilities after having her fortune told—making her the target of Alan Callaghan, an extreme anti-faery general. His sons, Iain and James, cross paths with Deirdre and are pushed towards the opposite sides of the conflict between humans and Fae. Iain is a rookie soldier in the Iron Guard trying to atone for past mistakes and keep his family together. James is a fourteen-year-old aspiring scholar fascinated by faeries and eager to leave his life in the city behind. As Alan conspires to control the city, Deirdre and James plot to leave, seeking answers about her magic and James’s disappeared mother. However, when Deirdre is framed for a treasonous crime, their quest for answers becomes a desperate quest for freedom. The Changeling’s Fortune is the first installment in a seven-book series.

Book excerpt: AUTHOR'S NOTE Most good stories come easily for authors who understand, fi rst hand, the fragility of values when pastoral holdings are overburdened with debt, or when the provenance of fi ne art is in question. So it is, also, when a farming woman is at her wits end, burdened with debt, abuse and the desperation to be loved. Born in the Australian outback, Peter Sharp spent his early working years as a talented livestock auctioneer. Some years later, a far cry from the dust and fl ies of country livestock saleyards, he makes a name for himself as an outstanding auctioneer and valuer of fi ne art in London. In 1965, when Sharp arrives at the prestigious out-back pastoral holding known as Morgan Plains, he is ready to value a small art collection. It's possible that all the paintings are fakes, but then again, maybe they are worth a fortune. However, there are some things he is not ready for and Malcolm Morgan is one of them. Quite by accident the background to this arrogant and enigmatic man lies with the young farming woman sitting next to Sharp at Morgan's dinner table that fi rst night. Morgan Plains covers an area 13% the size of Sicily, but there are closer ties to Sicily than that, as Sharp will soon fi nd out. His long time friend and mentor, Austin Yates unknowingly becomes the lynch-pin as this intriguing story unfolds. Quite apart from the intrigue surrounding the Morgan Collection, Fake or Fortune is a powerful love story; one that would never have happened had it not been for this chance assignment out on the vast black-soil plains of New South Wales. Ten years and several countries later Peter Sharp is more involved than ever with the Morgan Collection, and the love of this truly extraordinary country woman.

Book excerpt: In the years leading up to and directly following rapprochement with China in 1992, the South Korean government looked to ethnic Korean (Chosǒnjok) brides and laborers from northeastern China to restore productivity to its industries and countryside. South Korean officials and the media celebrated these overtures not only as a pragmatic solution to population problems but also as a patriotic project of reuniting ethnic Koreans after nearly fifty years of Cold War separation. As Caren Freeman's fieldwork in China and South Korea shows, the attempt to bridge the geopolitical divide in the name of Korean kinship proved more difficult than any of the parties involved could have imagined. Discriminatory treatment, artificially suppressed wages, clashing gender logics, and the criminalization of so-called runaway brides and undocumented workers tarnished the myth of ethnic homogeneity and exposed the contradictions at the heart of South Korea’s transnational kin-making project. Unlike migrant brides who could acquire citizenship, migrant workers were denied the rights of long-term settlement, and stringent quotas restricted their entry. As a result, many Chosǒnjok migrants arranged paper marriages and fabricated familial ties to South Korean citizens to bypass the state apparatus of border control. Making and Faking Kinship depicts acts of "counterfeit kinship," false documents, and the leaving behind of spouses and children as strategies implemented by disenfranchised people to gain mobility within the region’s changing political economy.

This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 305 pages. Book excerpt: Truth qualities of journalism are under intense scrutiny in today's world. Journalistic scandals have eroded public confidence in mainstream media while pioneering news media compete to satisfy the public's appetite for news. Still worse is the specter of "fake news" that looms over media and political systems that underpin everything from social stability to global governance. This volume aims to illuminate the contentious media landscape to help journalism students, scholars, and professionals understand contemporary conditions and arm them to deal with a spectrum of new developments ranging from technology and politics to best practices. Fake news is among the greatest of these concerns, and can encompass everything from sarcastic or ironic humor to bot-generated, made-up stories. It can also include the pernicious transmission of selected, biased facts, the use of incomplete or misleadingly selective framing of stories, and photographs that editorially convey certain characteristics. This edited volume contextualizes the current "fake news problem." Yet it also offers a larger perspective on what seems to be uniquely modern, computer-driven problems. We must remember that we have lived with the problem of people having to identify, characterize, and communicate the truth about the world around them for millennia. Rather than identify a single culprit for disseminating misinformation, this volume examines how news is perceived and identified, how news is presented to the public, and how the public responds to news. It considers social media's effect on the craft of journalism, as well as the growing role of algorithms, big data, and automatic content-production regimes. As an edited collection, this volume gathers leading scholars in the fields of journalism and communication studies, philosophy, and the social sciences to address critical questions of how we should understand journalism's changing landscape as it relates to fundamental questions about the role of truth and information in society.

This volume examines how the Granite State incubated Trump's political ambitions as early as the 1988 campaign cycle, how Trump's return to the state in 2014 presaged his 2016 candidacy, and how the state rescued his ambitions after his defeat in the Iowa caucuses. The book also examines how Trump lost the state to Hillary Clinton in the general election, and how the state has in many ways been a microcosm of national politics since Trump's election, as a Republican governor and legislature attempt to pursue their long-deferred agenda in the face of Democratic opposition and as Democrats racked up victories in special and off-year elections. Finally, this book examines what Trump's impact will be on the 2020 presidential primaries.

Book excerpt: "Own or Other Culture challenges those anthropologists who suggest that fieldwork in the "West" is easy or merely a reiteration of what is already "known" to either Westerners or non Westerners. Including a number of pioneering articles in social anthropology written over a period of twenty years, this book discusses selected themes such as questions of reflexivity and autobiography, anthropology in Europe, the cultural location of the anthropologist and feminism in anthropology. The introduction also places the work in its original context and in the light of recent developments and controversies in the discipline. Illustrated with photographs, Own or Other Culture is written in an accessible and vivid style. It covers subjects ranging from the author's own boarding school -- revealing a British exotica and colonial comparisons, to how Gypsies, treating non-Gypsies as the "other", act to create or manipulate cultural difference." --Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Deep Fakes: Algorithms and Society focuses on the use of artificial intelligence technologies to produce fictitious photorealistic audiovisual clips that are indistinguishable from traditional video media. For over a century, the indexical relationship of the photographic image, and its related media of film and video, to the scene of capture has served as a basis for truth claims. Historically, the iconicity of these images has featured a causal traceback to actual light rays in a particular time and space, which were fixed by chemical reactions or digital sensors to the resultant image. Today, photorealistic audiovisual media can be generated from deep learning networks which sever any connection to an actual event. Should society instantiate new regimes to manage this new challenge to our sense of reality and the traditional evidential capacities of the ‘mechanical image?’ How do these images generate information disorder while also providing the basis for legitimate tools used in entertainment and creative industries? Scholars and students from many backgrounds, as well as policy makers, journalists and the general reading public will find a multidisciplinary approach to questions posed by deep fake research from Communication, International Studies, Writing and Rhetoric.
